Modern Raleigh Colonial

This romantic guest suite in Raleigh was a dreamy project for a client with a flair for bold, modern style.

Inspired by a pair of the client’s existing purple velvet chairs, the room’s color palette combines vivid orchid walls with deep navy and rusty red. The custom drapes feature a favorite Kristy Stafford textile that pulls it all together and carries the pattern into the adjacent bathroom with a matching Roman shade. The navy blue contrasting trim helps ground the purple for a masculine-feminine combo that’s a bit unexpected. A channel-tufted navy velvet headboard and purple linen bedding are topped with a granny-chic custom quilted bolster pillow.

If you wondered, that pair (you only see one here) of fabulous yellow Italian sconces were a full-body yes, as was a vintage Italian floor lamp with adjustable arms. A vibrant painting by local artist Jen Matthews adds the perfect amount of punch that leads into a bathroom featuring striped cream and rust red zellige tile. A simple black stone floor tile keeps the focus on the stripes above and pulls the red hues into the bathroom from the bedroom.

The stunning brown-gray Quartzite stone in the connected guest powder room features ribbons of red that feel like a match made in heaven with the Italian floral glass mirror above. Simple globe sconces flank the mirror and keep the whole thing from feeling too fussy.

While the guest suite was coming together, the clients asked for a refresh of their 7-year-old son’s bedroom. His favorite colors: “light blue and dark red!” So a light blue and dark red room was what we gave him. The navy trim and fun new carpet (blue with flecks of green) helped distract from the ceilings various pitches. Both the desk and dresser were existing pieces; otherwise, we filled the room with affordable big box store pieces—with a custom twist. A Crate & Barrel bed and kids’ desk chair got reupholstered.
